30 Days Down Under - Part 6 - Hobart Tasmania

Seals?

Have you ever had your luggage delivered by a seal?
Thanks to one of the lesser of the many unique and curious things about Tasmania, I have (sort of).

Melbourne is on the north shore of  Bass Strait, which separates mainland Australia from Tasmania.
Bass Strait was famous from 1798 into the 1810's and a very little beyond for its sealing industry (is "industry" the right word?). Huge amounts of fur seals lived on Bass Strait's shores and islands - a great resource for the seal and whale oil industry and hat makers of the UK and China.  The predation on both adults and pups was quick and lethal - within 10 or 15 years few were left.  Harvests are bound to collapse when little seed is planted  (a very short summary here). It was repeated a short time later on Macquarie Island, a remote Tasmanian island off towards Antarctica (see here).


Mind you, a few of the seals' descendents have found ways to retaliate, like this seal squashing a car.
But their population's recovery hasn't been quick, so Tasmania protects them (see here).

A ferry runs between Melbourne and Tasmania, but since our trip covered a lot of ground (and water), and since the ferry takes 11 hours and lands at Devonport on Tasmania's north coast - a long way from Hobart on the southwest coast, we flew to Hobart.

Upon landing at Hobart, we walked down the stairs from the plane, crossed the tarmac, walked through a (temporary?) shelter/corridor offering protection from wind and rain, entered the small but sparkling modern terminal, and went to the baggage area.  And there we met our seal, announcing the arrival of a new planeload of bags.

Sleeping, Eating, Drinking

We caught a taxi into our hotel, the RACV Hobart.  The RACV is Australia's equivalent of the AAA (American Automobile Association) - and the RACV has hotels and resorts in a few places around Australia.  Because Ginny is a member of the AAA we qualified for their rate discount.  It was the nicest hotel we stayed in on our trip, and one of the least costly ones. (Though to help you match expectations, 3 star is about the best we usually go - we're not 4 star people ... we'd rather spend more on experiences than comfort or things.  When I walk by a backpacker hostel I often feel a pang of envy)

A few things we really enjoyed at the RACV Hobart:
The large windows in the room didn't have drapes.  Rather, they had folding doors ... a great idea that we hadn't seen before ... much easier to keep clean and longer lasting.

The included breakfasts were great. Ahh. Bircher. Everywhere in Australia that we ate breakfast, one of the selections always included Bircher. We'd never heard of it before. We loved it. It seemed to be a mixture of muesli, a bit of fruit, and a very runny yoghurt and/or very milky cream. It became our favorite part of breakfast.  (We also tried marmite. Sorry Australians. Never again.)

The third thing I liked about the hotel: its restaurant and its bar introduced me to Tasmanian whiskey.  Tasmania seems to have raised a good crop of local distillers - no need to afford Glenfiddich here.  I don't drink much; it's rare when I have a beer or anything harder. But when we go out to eat I'll usually have one drink of something: a glass of wine, or a glass of dark beer (Australia didn't seem to have much dark beer), or a cocktail, or rarely, a double shot of whiskey neat. Hobart


Hobart is comfortable.
It's only a little bigger than Eugene Oregon where I went to university, and like Eugene, it's very laid back. Lots of denim. Lots of wool. Lots of foul weather gear. Lots of art.  Lots of crafts.

It has an old feel about it, with block after block of gracious old sandstone buildings, some dating back to the  sealing & whaling days, mixed in with newer buildings of every era.

Hobart is in large part a workingman's town with a large nickle mine, a port and all of the muscular industry that goes with, including many working fishing boats.

When we were walking along the docks we came to this two-masted sailing ship with its accompanying sign. Sponsored by a number of civic organizations it enables refugee youths in Tasmania to join experienced Tasmanian youths as mentors to sail the vessel.  Later in our trip we talked with someone who was in Hobart only a couple of days after we were. He had taken a photo of the ship out in the harbor with the youths up in the rigging.

What a great way to welcome and integrate refugees into a country.

Antarctica

 Hobart is one of the major supply points for Antarctica, the three major supply points for it being the southern tip of South America  (Punta Arenas, Chile and Ushuaia, Argentina), New Zealand (Christchurch), and Australia (Hobart)

Australia deserves lots of credit regarding Antarctica.

After lengthy multi-national negotiations, an international treaty was signed in 1959 regulating and formalizing activities in Antarctica, the "1959 Antarctic Treaty".  It created a loose structure that has since periodically been supplemented and modified by additional agreements. (See a summary here)

In 1988 representatives of 33 nations agreed on a framework permitting and regulating mining and mineral extraction in Antarctica, the Antarctic Minerals Convention (also known as the Wellington Convention). In 1989, Prime Minister Hawke of Australia announced Australia's objection.  As a result the agreement was never ratified.

In its place, after another set of lengthy negotiations another international agreement was enacted, the "1991 Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty", also called "the Madrid Protocol".  It prohibits mining  and "... provides that protection of the Antarctic environment and dependent and associated ecosystems and the intrinsic value of Antarctica must be fundamental considerations in the planning and conduct of all human activities in Antarctica."  http://www.antarctica.gov.au/law-and-treaty/the-madrid-protocol

But ... it's important to keep watch.
Not all nations have agreed to the 1959 Antarctic Treaty and its subsequent annexes. A treaty is only as strong as the good faith and willingness of its signatories to abide by it. And the Madrid Protocol has a provision to revisit the provision about mining in 50 years, in 2041.

Salamanca Market


Absolutely, if you are in Tasmania, be in Hobart on Saturday to attend the Salamanca Market.

It's huge (and it's crowded). The largest market I've ever been to (and I've been to a lot). It was full of everything ... the full gamut of any market ... it brought back memories of when in college in the late 60's and early 70's I used to sell lemonade and with an ex, her pottery, in what were then called "Renaissance Faires" in Oregon.  One thing that particularly caught my eye ... even though I didn't need it I almost bought one: a beautiful thick heavy hand-tooled leather belt for about 1/3 the cost of an equally heavy but untooled belt I got earlier this year from Filson's in Seattle.

And one thing there caught both my eye and my billfold: Jamie Maslin was selling his book "The Long Hitch Home, Tasmania to London on a Thumb and a Prayer." The subject alone would have enticed me to buy it. But when I saw the extreme opposites praising it (Noam Chomsky: "Very well done. Arouses many poignant memories" and Roger Stone: "Travel writing as it should be") I couldn't resist. I got him to sign it for both me and my long-time best buddy from college days - we never got it together to take a trip of our dreams like that.  I was going to read it and give it to him when we skied together this winter in Oregon. But I stupidly texted him about the book and the f-er bought himself a copy before I got home.

MONA - Museum of Old and New Art

MONA has become one of the major attractions in Tasmania. Don't miss it (even though some may be offended by parts of it). Link to MONA here

MONA is a collection as untamed as much of Tasmania is said to be. A collection of everything.  As its name says, both old and new art, but also far beyond art. Things from everyday life.  Things that have meaning. Things representing the full range of human life: the spoken and the unspoken: passion, thought, fear, suffering, hopes, visions.

The New Yorker  magazine ran a review of it "... mona begins to feel like a mashup of the lost city of Petra and a late night out in Berlin. Everything about it is disorienting and yet somehow familiar, from the high-tech tropes, the low-culture babble, the black humor about so much that is so serious, the attention to aesthetics in a museum unsure if beauty exists or, if it does, if it matters." You get to it most easily by boat. (Warning: if you can't handle the seriously long flight of stairs up from the boat landing consider taking an auto or bus to it.)

MONA is carved deep into sandstone which is left raw and exposed throughout much of it.

One of the first things you'll see inside is this impossibly long table set for a banquet that never happens. To get a sense of scale, see the two attendants setting the flower centerpieces that are periodically changed. (They're near the back to the left of the table.) And compare them to the height of the magnificent sandstone wall.

One of the pictures below is a sculpture of shards of metal and glass - nearby are some cobbles from the passenger's platform from the Hiroshima railroad station and a large collection of hand-rubbings from it.

The entire human experience is fair game here at MONA, like it or not.

Why We Came to Tasmania

"In 1787, the twenty-eighth year of the reign of King George III, the British Government sent a fleet to colonize Australia.

"Never had a colony been founded so far from its parent state, or in such ignorance of the land it occupied. There had been no reconnaissance. In 1770 Captain James Cook had made landfall on the unexplored east coast of this utterly enigmatic continent, stopped for a short while at a place named Botany Bay and gone north again. Since then, no ship had called: not a word, not an observation, for seventeen years, each one of which was exactly like the thousands that had preceded it, locked in its historical immensity of blue heat, bush, sandstone and the measured booming of glassy Pacific rollers.

"Now this coast was to witness a new colonial experiment, never tried before, not repeated since. An unexplored continent would become a jail. The space around it, the very air and sea, the whole transparent labyrinth of the South Pacific would become a wall 14,000 miles thick."

Thus begins The Fatal Shore by Robert Hughes. The epic of Australia's founding. It brings to life the lives and interactions of the convicts, the aboriginals, the governors and their soldiers, the settlers and landowners. It's a vivid read, leaving untouched no facet of their public lives and those things that would be unspoken..


We came to Tasmania because of this dude.

Robert Lockwood was a "currency lad" ... a mid 1800's term for a convict's son. He was my great, great grandpa. He emigrated from Tasmania to the U.S. - to Oregon's outback, the gold mining town of Canyon City. Eventually, as a deputy sheriff, he became the first lawman killed in Oregon.

His dad had been transported from England to Van Diemen's Land in 1835 for, according to records, stealing seven turkeys. (They're big unwieldy birds. How in the hell did he do that?)

Although he wasn't jailed in Port Arthur (he was assigned as indentured farm help to settlers north of Hobart), we decided to visit Port Arthur because of its importance to convict history.

Usually we travel independently.  But travelling independently you often don't get the backstory to the place, and often miss some real gems.  A good person to guide can really help, and is usually more valuable than those awful crowded and timed bus tours. After some research a couple of months before our trip we contacted Heather Henri of "Lets Show You Tasmania Tours" http://www.showyoutasmania.com.au/

She was a great choice and planned a very full, interesting and informative day for us. She's a native of, and still lives on, the Tasman Peninsula relatively close to Port Arthur, so was the perfect selection as our guide. As we passed various bays, beaches, and farms she described events on them wh she was growing up. It was like having a relative guide you around their hometown.

She picked us up in her van at our hotel and on our way out of Hobart told us backstories to many of the buildings that we had walked past - it made all the difference between just passively seeing something and knowing a little depth about it.

At an inlet called Blackman Bay, near Tasman Bay, down a nondescript road in Dunalley (Imlay Street) we visited an unimpressive monument to an important moment: the discovery of Tasmania and, in this case, exploration by Abel Tasman's crew.

The Tasman Peninsula reminds me of the Oregon coast when I was a kid in the late 1950's with only small amounts of development and crescent beaches stretching between rocky headlands.
There are two places where it's almost cut into two islands by narrow isthmuses: at Dunalley (the location of the above-mentioned monument to Tasman) where there a hand-dug canal dating from 1905 shortens the trading route to Hobart from the east coast, and at Eaglehawk Neck.

In the 1830's and 1840's Port Arthur was a prison with walls, within a prison walled by dogs staked at Eaglehawk Neck, within the prison of Tasmania walled by water, within a prison of Australia walled by oceans. The end of the earth.

Within those prisons rapid communication was important to the guards. A system of semaphores was constructed to flag messages quickly between Hobart, Port Arthur, and outposts such as Eaglehawk Neck.


The dogs, the sentries, the semaphores all were in support of the Port Arthur prison.  For the most part, it was used for the worst offenders.  It was a convict site from 1830 to 1877, growing from a crude lumbering workcamp to a large industrial prison complex with mills, workshops, and shipbuilding. No self-respecting prison would be without a church; a small village of houses for the families of its commandant, doctor, and such; a guest house for visiting officials; and of course, a proper english garden. And where better than on a hill overlooking the prison.  The barracks for the soldier guards, probably for good reason, were on another, very separate, hill.



Port Arthur has another claim to notoriety: In 1996 35 people were killed and 23 wounded here in a deadly mass shooting. Immediately afterwards, that very year, Australia instituted, with bi-partisan support, strict gun control, with fast-fire and high-capacity guns restricted from the general population, strict and uniform licensing to own any gun, and the government bought back all restricted guns.

Compare that to the US - how many mass shootings occur, killing how many each month? The states and federal governments don't even have an agreed system to track it - is it that they are afraid to know?

The US is a violent country .... both outside and inside its borders.

The most recent statistics I've come across show:

  • The US has a gun-death rate 25 times higher than the 22 other high-income countries, and Americans are 10 times as likely to be killed by guns than citizens of those other countries (Ref: American Journal of Medicine and here)
  • The statistics aren't better when comparing the US to ALL other countries.
    Murder rates in the US are 4.88 per 100,000 people, while the median of all countries is 3.74 per 100,000 - and that median is raised by notoriously violent countries, or countries one would expect to be violent, like Honduras, Sudan, Syria, and Afghanistan (military/war deaths are excluded)
    The murder rate in Australia is only  0.98 per 100,000 (Ref: from UN Office on Drugs and Crime as reported on Wikipedia


The End (of Native Tasmanians)

Unfortunately we didn't have time to explore much of Tasmania.  We would have liked to explore more, especially the craggy and windswept mountains in the interior and the rugged western coastline.

But at least we explored the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in Hobart. It was quite good - you should be sure to visit it. There we learned about the Black War.

Between 1824 and 1832 the indigenous peoples in Tasmania were decimated.  The Europeans were encroaching on their land, leading to conflict. European diseases were felling the aboriginals. With white males outnumbering white females 6 to 1, many took aboriginal women by force.  That triggered more violence. The aboriginals fought and raided, burned and killed. The Europeans fought back, killing too. Bounties were placed for the capture or killing of aboriginals. In 1830 Governor George Arthur had every able bodied man form a line which swept the indigenous Tasmanians from settled areas to the Tasman Peninsula.

Eventually, by 1832 all the remaining aboriginals has been transported to Flinders Island in the Bass Strait between the mainland and Tasmania . By 1847 only 47 Tasmanian aboriginals had survived; they were transferred to near Hobart. The last of the full-blooded original Tasmanians died in 1876. And so, on that happy note, we boarded a plane to Sydney and stayed a night at the Ibis Sydney Airport. It was modern, clean, convenient with (not free) shuttles to/from the nearby airport, but it was like staying in a boat's (not ship's) cabin - a fly/sleep/fly place.  Early the next morning we flew to Queenstown, New Zealand, the next to last stop on our way back to our comfortable home.

30 Days Down Under - Part 5 - Melbourne

Flying to Melbourne

This preamble is too long and is likely boring and extraneous.  I encourage you to ignore it and jump to the rest of the blog below my aerial photo of Melbourne.

Returning our Budget rental car at the Cairns Airport for our flight to Melbourne was a small confusion, one of those things that happens on trips.

The overhead signage made it clear where to return rental cars for all of the companies ... except not Budget. We had picked up the car in the domestic terminal parking, so presumed the return was there. Nope. The only sign we could see for Budget directed us towards the international terminal, so questioningly that's where we went. There were a few stalls marked for Budget, but it was outside of the lot for most of the car returns and it wasn't explicitly signed for car returns. We tentatively parked there and determined that I'd wait in the car while Ginny went in and enquired at the counter.  I waited.  And I waited.  I tried her cell phone.

Here I should interject. In the States our phone plan is with T-Mobile.  Their standard plan gives us free text and data almost anywhere in the world, and worldwide voice calls only cost a little (20 cents/minute in Australia). So we both take our phones on trips; we figure that's a way to find each other if we get separated. But that plan works only if BOTH phones are turned on and not in airplane mode.

No answer - I got her voicemail.

She had not taken her camera.  Once, in a German hill town with the streets a warren and higgly-piggly, we had parked our car somewhere and couldn't find where we left it.  We approached various people and tried to describe where we had left it ... that's almost impossible in a strange town filled with half-timbered buildings and cobbled streets with few signs, especially with only a rudimentary knowledge of the language. Luckily we eventually found someone who thought they knew what we might be trying to describe ... they surprisingly were able to show us a way to the car. After that, if we were in a location where we might get lost, we'd developed a habit of taking strategic photos at every turn of our route ... like bread crumbs, we could always retrace our steps on the camera's screen. But who needs to do that in an airport, right?

Eventually I broke the cardinal rule ... if separated, one of you stay where you last were together, otherwise you might both wander forever missing each other.  I got out of the car to look for her.

Luckily I hadn't gotten too far before I ran into her.  She had gone into the international terminal and found the Budget counter there unattended, so she walked to the domestic terminal.  The counter there was unattended too. Trying to return to the car, she ended up searching through the various parking areas until we found each other.  When we returned to our car another couple pulled up and asked us where they should return their Budget car. We finally used the key drop at one of the counters, along with a note about where we'd left the car.  We forewent the quick dinner that we no longer had time for, and hurried to check in.  A few days ago we got our credit card bill.  They must have found the car.  The statement was for the expected amount.


Welcome back to the travel blog.

In many ways, when two people are flying together, it's handy to be in a plane that has only two seats abreast next to the windows.  But in other ways, having three seats abreast can result in fascinating conversations if people are interested in talking.  The plane we were on had three abreast.  The woman who had our window seat seemed pleasant - we exchanged the normal pleasantries, but she was busy reading so we were quiet. Eventually, as we got close to Melbourne, her home, she began engaging, pointing out things through the window and telling us about Melbourne.  I think she didn't mind me reaching over to take photos out the window.

We grabbed a cab to the hotel.  We're not in the habit of using taxi's (or Uber - Wall Street's way of transferring money from those slaving in the gig economy to their coffers). We usually either drive, bike, or use public transport. But throughout this trip we took taxis to/from the airports to save the hassle of both of us schlepping our luggage on public transport - we did enough of that when a bit younger.

I'm glad I didn't have to drive in Melbourne; it's questionable whether I would have gotten used to Melbourne's unique way of making a right turn from a busy two direction street (I'd read about it, but never quite figured it out from descriptions.). I watched attentively as our taxi driver, when we needed to turn right, would pull to the left, almost into the crosswalk, to let traffic behind him pass, and then just as the signal changed, would turn right across all lanes of the stopped traffic.  Eventually I realized that there was a separate signal with a right turn arrow that synchronized the traffic for those maneuvers.  It's easier to understand when seen than when one reads about it. And amazingly, it works.

Months before we left on our trip we had decided on a good but economic hotel that was centrally located and handy for walking. We'd stayed at a lot of Ibis in Europe ... economical, functional, dependable, and clean. So we had booked the "Ibis Styles Melbourne, The Victoria Hotel" - a strange amalgam of two names that, we found, were equally well understood by using either of the two names individually or both in tandem.

When our taxi pulled up in front of the hotel we were a bit worried, hoping our rooms would be on the back.

It was Saturday night. Across Little Collins Street from the hotel was a nightclub with the door open, people standing outside, emitting music with a low-frequency thumping beat. (I wonder how a Daintree cassowary would react. Their bird calls are super-low frequency - a sound that travels best and further through the rainforest or other obstructions ... Hmmm ... Primeval music)

In the ensuing Sunday and Monday evenings the door was closed and silent. It was just a blank, unmarked door in an unmarked wall without any sign. Had I been younger and single it would have been worth exploring that night.

Just a few feet down the street, at the corner of Swanston Street, was a small plaza with a busker with an amplifier playing his guitar and singing. A crowd had gathered, sitting on the plaza's steps and raised planters to listen to him and watch people dance to his music.

Luckily we needn't have worried about the noise.  During the rest of our stay the activity and noise wasn't happening. And to our relief, our assigned room was far, far away on the back.  We had to take an elevator to the 6th floor, walk down a long hallway through a few sets of glass fire doors, then take another elevator to the 7th floor, more glass fire doors, 2 corridors, and finally, our room.

The hotel  apparently was at one time one of the elegant major hotels in the city.  It seems to have gradually expanded, albeit much more functionally without its former elegance, amalgamating several adjacent buildings. When we checked in the clerk apologized for the distance to our room and said they'd get us a closer room the next day. But the room, and its walk, were fine with us.  Like every Ibis we'd previously stayed in until then, the hotel and the room were perfectly fine ... functional, clean, and well kept.

After settling our bags into the room we tried to find a place to eat our delayed dinner.  We walked a bit but finding nothing better, resigned to a Starbucks, eating sandwiches amongst the typical Saturday-night-downtown couples in it.  It was caddy corner from the busker's plaza, so after eating we wandered over to join the crowd listening to his music (he was very good) and watching the dancing.

Exploring Melbourne

First thing in the morning we wandered the 3 blocks down Swanston Street amidst its trams, people walking, and people biking to Federation Square.

Melbourne is well-known for having lots of of trams (street cars), and as this picture shows, has a fair number of  cyclists. I wonder how they deal with the danger the tracks' rails pose to people biking. (See summaries of their danger from  City lab here and from a cyclist here, both referencing a  Study of Toronto here)

On the way to Federation Square we passed a construction site for a major underground transit tunnel.

On this trip we noticed massive transit tunnels and accompanying transit and improvements for people walking and biking being built in Sydney and Auckland.  On a previous trip to China we saw such projects everywhere.

Vancouver Canada has a well developed public transit system; it  is the only major North American city with NO freeway within its city limits. Now more than 50% of all trips are totally by walking, biking, or using public transit. Background to Vancouver's approach to transportation is here

People in Seattle, WA, USA voted for, and taxed themselves for, major public transit system improvements which are partly built and partly in planning. (map here and history of voter approval here)
...BUT...
The system in Seattle depends on the continuation of federal funding at past levels. Trump has indicated he would abolish most, if not all, of the federal funding for public transit. It's heartening to visit countries like Canada and Australia which seem to be forward looking and robust while Trump's USA seems more like Britain post WWI, walling itself off and isolating itself from the world, its arms and fingers tightly clutching at its past and its hoard of gold.

Our first stop: Federation Square.

Built in the 2000's it's a very large precinct with an expansive plaza swarming with people on this sunny early spring day, with multiple stepped levels opening into angular public buildings with complex geometries, all built over a rail yard.

It's the center of tourist interest: it's next to Princes Bridge and Swanston Street, which together are the focus of most of Melbourne's tram system, and it's across the street from the major Flanders Street rail station.

In the square were all sorts of canopied booths - one especially caught my eye - a recruiting booth for the State of Victoria police: "Be a Force for Good". What a great way of thinking about the role of police - far removed from the rancor that's happening in Seattle about the role of police.  I sent the photo to one of Seattle's police community relations officers.

Major promenades and parks fan out from Federation Square in both directions along the Yarra River. And it has a surprisingly large and well-staffed two level tourist information center where we oriented ourselves and picked up walking maps.

Melbourne's Streetscape:

Melbourne's center has an unusual grid layout that has created much of Melbourne's ambiance.  Major multi-lane di-directional streets are very long blocks apart, about 760 feet in both directions.

Running roughly parallel to the Yarra river are Flinders, Collins, Bourke, and others major streets. Halfway between each are smaller streets, mostly 1 lane, one-way, sometimes with parking on one side (Flinders Lane, Little Collins Street, Little Bourke Street, etc.)

Running perpendicular to the river are the major streets such as Russell, Swanston, Elizabeth, and others.  But there are no intermediary secondary streets interspaced between them.  Instead, in place of any intermediary streets, in the 19th century a number of narrow arcades were built with glassed roofs arching overhead.  Carefully maintained, they are now one of Melbourne's major attractions.  One of the tourist information maps outlines a route through them. We followed it..







Melbourne is a mix of the formal and more elegant past and the cacophony of the 21st century.  Between the major streets are many (far more than the tour books suggest) small alleys or lanes containing other attractions which Melbourne tolerates and is noted for: street art (graffiti)  - layers upon layers of it in continuous anarchistic change. Much of it is a horrible mess, but much of it is in the best tradition of street art. I especially liked the eye below the arc of color.



















Art, Bridges, Promenades, and Parks

Melbourne also curates a more relaxed personality.  Extending from Princes Bridge and Federation Square in both directions along the Yarra River are parks, promenades, and walks linked across the river by many modernistic pedestrian bridges.

The art along the river is less spontaneous than that in the lanes, but it's still lively.



One of the bridges across the Yarra, Sandridge Bridge, is an artistic ode to immigrants.
It is a former railroad bridge from the 1880's that was converted in 2006 into a bridge for walking and biking.  It has large steel sculptures, "The Travellers" by Nadim Karam, some of which periodically travel across the bridge on a system of rails. (We weren't there at the right time. We didn't notice them moving.)

It includes a multitude of glass panels, one for each country from which people immigrated to Melbourne.

For each country the panels list the regions the immigrants came from, an historical summary of the waves of immigration including the cause of the wave(s), and the number of immigrants from that home country.

I sadly wonder if the Statue of Liberty in New York City, which is inscribed "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore." would be erected today if it was newly proposed.

Along both banks of the Yarra are a variety of promenades and walks.

Downstream (to the west and south of Princes Bridge and Federation Square), it is urban and crowded.















A short walk upstream (east of  Princes Bridge and Federation Square) the river is lined with parks.















St. Kilda

One afternoon we took the tram to St. Kilda.

Across from Federation Square, between two tram tracks in the middle of Swanston Street, is a busy boarding platform. They even have "station" attendants announcing and coordinating trams and helping guide people to the correct car.  Coming from the US with its historic austerity, especially austerity about government programs.  That's one of the things we noticed about Australia - the number of people performing public jobs that in the US would be non-existent.

Like many typical males, I tend not to ask directions.  So my better half approached an attendant to check if I was right about which tram to take.  To my ear Ginny, after living in the states for 30 years, doesn't have a Canadian accent.  But the attendant immediately picked up on it. A conversation ensued, squeezed in between his announcements and answering tourists - a couple of trams to St. Kilda passed.  He had lived in Alberta Canada, where his mother still lived.  He was proud to be a citizen of, and hold passports from, three countries ... Croatia (or one of those nearby countries - I can't remember which - his birth country), Canada, and now Australia.  I wonder which of those countries the glass panels on the Sandbridge Bridge would have accounted him on. Gone is the world when many people ignorantly feared roaming outside of their tribe.

In St. Kilda we walked along the beach and spent some time watching the kiteboarders. We had hoped to see the small colony of Fairy Penguins on the jetty, but because the jetty was fenced off, and/or we didn't know precisely where to go, and/or we didn't stay late enough into the evening, we didn't see them.




Exhausted

We were only in Melbourne for two full days ... and did too much in much too little time. We were exhausted.

One of our difficulties in travelling is eating.  We're not great foodies; we just use food as body fuel.  We do like good food and delight in finding it.  But it doesn't work out too well to research a list of good places - generally we can't predict where we'll be at meal time and just try to find some place nearby when we're hungry. Consequently, most of the meals we have are mediocre at best (we have to figure out a better way).  But...

Of all the meals we had in Australia, one of our favorites was in Melbourne.  We'd been busy walking that afternoon ... it was warm and sunny so we hadn't taken jackets.  Clouds came in quickly.  We were in Flanders Lane, not far from our hotel when it started to rain.  We noticed a place that looked nice and (a good sign) busy. The greeter had only one spot left ... a long table for about or 9 people that we could share with three others. They were at one end, we at the other, close enough that we could have talked if all had wanted, but far enough apart that it wasn't awkward ignoring each other.  They were busy whining about this and that, so we enjoyed our own company.  It was a great Asian-fusion food place called Supernormal.

Our biggest regret about our trip to Downunder was that we spent too little time in Melbourne.  There was much more to explore in this truly world class city. And it would also have been great to have extra time to get out and explore the Great Ocean Road, to get to Phillips Island, and strangely, to get to Ballarat.

Ballarat?  We don't watch much TV, but Seattle's PBS stations carry a number of Australian series which we do watch: A Pace to Call Home, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, and especially, Dr. Blake Mysteries which is set in post WWII Ballarat. And it has a strong place in Australia's history.

We were exhausted. When we got done eating at Supernormal we hurried back to our hotel through the rain, and bedraggled and wet, we got to bed for our early flight to Hobart, hoping to keep the flying petri dish's respiratory thing at bay.
